We booked Robert for a start-of-year training session focusing on differentiation and stretching more able students. A few days after the booking was confirmed, Robert phoned to discuss our objectives, by which time he had already researched Bradford Grammar School and was able to make helpful suggestions based on his extensive experience presenting to teachers in comparable schools. Robert's presentation in September was the perfect way to start the year. He delivered an intensive session which challenged us to consider what differentiation actually means, to vary our teaching style from one lesson to the next and to try something different. It was thoroughly prepared, well-paced, and presented in a light style which engaged his audience. He left us with some resources which he had demonstrated and I know some colleagues are already using them. I have no doubt that the experience of our pupils in lessons has benefitted from Robert's visit.

Paul Merckx, Assistant Head (Development), Bradford Grammar School

Robert Powell was invited to train over forty members of staff at our yearly residential. The focus was to provide a wide range of practical strategies linked to differentiation; establishing success criteria;engaging pupils through technology; pupil ownership in self-review and peer feedback. Staff were engaged and entertained from beginning to end and were eager to begin using the exciting and innovative ideas back in the school with the pupils. Through his positive integrity, truthfulness and straightforward conduct, I would highly recommend his training to other primary schools. One of the best inspirational trainers I have come across in my 16 years in education.
Mrs Jennifer Seabright, Deputy Headteacher, Alexandra Park Junior School, Oldham.

Money well spent! Rarely does the booking of an outside speaker lead to educational transformation. However, Robert’s ideas have challenged our pre-conceptions in a hugely positive way.

Neil Finlay, Headteacher, Walton High School, Stafford.

Robert Powell’s visionary approach highlights consistency rather than conformity and inspires the hearts and minds of teachers. I can honestly say that his philosophy, and the practical strategies he is renowned for, have had a bigger impact upon my school than any other author or trainer I have met in my 18 years as a headteacher.
Jim Godfrey, Headteacher, Marston Vale Middle School, Beds.

When you came to Wakefield City Academy to deliver a day's INSET on teaching and learning for us, you said that Ofsted usually follow behind. Well you were right! We had Ofsted in March and managed outstanding in every category. We would like to thank you for your help in achieving this. We knew we were not outstanding prior to you coming in but your input and suggestions were followed up in subsequent twilight sessions and were invaluable in helping us get a grade 1 for teaching and learning. Once again, thank you so much for your help.
Marie Hunter, Co Headteacher, Wakefield City Academy

We were absolutely delighted with how well the training day went last week. The feedback from staff was immensely positive, with a number describing it as "inspirational" and "the best training day I have ever been to". Certainly, from the school's point of view, it achieved the two key objectives of launching our review of teaching and learning excellence whilst at the same time providing staff with a wealth of good ideas which they could readily implement in their own teaching.
John Hartley, Headteacher, Saffron Walden County High School, Essex

Robert’s inset day left all the staff buzzing with ideas and enthusiasm. I am sure the techniques will help any school to extend and enrich best practice.
Sandra Gilliband, Headteacher, Roseacre Primary School, Blackpool

Robert’s INSET on outstanding teaching and learning was just the ‘shot in the arm’ that my staff, ranging from Nursery to Year 6, needed at the start of a busy term:

“An inspirational day covering a wide range of suggestions for classroom and group management, target setting, strategies for pupil participation, assessment for learning and electronic feedback. A most enjoyable INSET!” (CL of English )

“Brilliant day! I feel very inspired and have started using some of the ideas already!” (Year 2 Class Teacher)

“INSET as it should be: witty, well presented and informative” (Director of Music).

“I found the INSET incredibly useful. He was extremely interesting and was able to make his sessions informative yet light-hearted. As Year Group (Year 1) we were very motivated by his practical ideas on class targets and classroom management. We have been able to easily adapt the ideas so that we can use them in our classrooms”. (SENCO)

“I found Robert Powell’s INSET most rewarding as did colleagues. He demonstrated a wealth of teaching experience but remains up-beat, highly motivational with innovative ideas delivered with great humour. Marvellous!” (CL of Science)

“Have already used the numbering of the children so the quiet ones, too, get a chance to answer. I will be working in pairs and groups as well in the near future, and no doubt about making those dominoes for our little ones in English and Maths. Thanks to Robert. Never had so much fun on an INSET day!” (Head of Reception)
Antony J.W. Hudson, Headmaster, St George’s College Junior School

I have just got around to reviewing and compiling the feedback forms on the training day you did for us. I just wanted to say how successful it was and how much staff both enjoyed and benefited from it. The feedback on your leadership and presentation was particularly complimentary. A few of the comments were:

“Funny, informative, engaging. Refreshing and also inspirational.”

“Excellent knowledge, relaxed and good sense of humour.”

“Robert was engaging and interesting. Entertaining, informative, encouraged us to have confidence in our own professional judgement. Felt he was on our side. Put some of our past problems into perspective and caused us to reflect on our current post-OFSTED trajectory.”

“Very good. Humour appreciated. Relevant, not just theory. Inclusive - all subjects covered. Dynamic. Technology well used.”

“Good, entertaining, realistic and practical. Superb, inspiring and passionate. ‘Everyone needs a Robert Powell in their lives.”
Marina Blakeway, Teaching and learning Coordinator, King Edward VI School, Lichfield

Robert delivered an outstanding presentation in an engaging manner with a huge amount of practical content. The quality of information had members of staff diving for their pens and recording teaching techniques which they knew would instantly enhance the learning opportunities for our pupils.Below are some quotes which came through in the CPD day evaluation:

“I thought it was amazing and the best CPD that I have had in ten years. Robert was witty and kept everyone’s interest throughout the day with real-life examples of how to use his teaching ideas.”

“The training was inspiring and invigorating and has allowed creativity to flow.”

“We all learned something that we can use - progress was made by all!!”

“The best training session that I have attended (ever). I am already using ideas that Robert introduced us to in lessons (Friday the 29th of June), and there were no flip charts or Post-it notes in sight!”

Two weeks on and members of staff are still talking about areas that were covered on that day. Teaching and learning are at the forefront of everyone’s minds, which has led to the Leadership Team responding to their request to bring Robert back for further work with subject teams.
Kevin Blakey, Vice Principal, Thetford Academy

Thank you for the sessions you delivered at DGGS on Friday. The response from colleagues was overwhelmingly positive. Please see below for one or two feedback comments. There is a faculty meeting on Thursday where colleagues are taking this further following their comments. Below are some quotes which came through in the CPD day evaluation:

“Thank you very much for inviting such a positive and inspiring speaker on Friday. The combination of his research, teaching and leadership experience, coupled with his practical suggestions, made him a thoroughly enjoyable and motivating speaker.

“I just wanted to say how brilliant the speaker was, and how refreshing it was to have someone who was not afraid to challenge our policies and make us re-evaluate whether it is time to review our strategies.
Simon Hardwick, Dartford Girls Grammar School

Simply, Robert elicited from the Stowe staff the most positive response we've ever had to a communal day's INSET.
Stephen Hirst, Director of Studies, Stowe School

Robert. Thank you for your inspiring INSET which so many staff clearly enjoyed and found uplifting despite their tiredness after a very intensive few weeks. Lots of departments clearly came away with lots of useful strategies to implement.
Wycombe Abbey School

The day's professional development from Robert Powell designed to improve teaching and learning was excellent and was well received by staff in this day special school for pupils with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. The school is in special measures and the impact on the levels of pupil engagement and the quality of pupil learning from the strategies and resources presented by Mr Powell on the day was noted by HMI:

'The training from the external consultant was a valuable contribution to the development of teaching aimed at capturing the pupils' interest. Staff were keen and receptive and this training holds much promise.'

Mr Powell demonstrated a clear and sensitive understanding of the needs of this school's EBSD population and a capacity to engage staff positively with the challenge of motivating and engaging these complex and difficult pupils.
Nell Banfield, Principal, Manchester Federation of EBSD Schools
